Throughout our ongoing “Area Focus” series, we’re exploring the regions of Charleston that are growing, changing, and evolving the most. Read more about it here.

Here are links to the previous posts in the series so you can get caught up:

The areas we’ve explored to date have mostly undergone a recent boom in revitalization and development. In the next couple of blogs, we’ll be looking at some long-standing Charleston suburbs that have always been on the map but are home to recent developments – starting with Johns Island.

The Rundown: Johns Island used to be thought of Charleston’s “rural” suburb, far from restaurants, shopping, jobs, and other city conveniences. People moved here to gain more space as property values started to rise closer to the city center. Today, the area is home to sprawling master-planned communities comprised of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments. Along with more residents came a boom of shopping centers and restaurants. Though many Charlestonians think this of Johns Island as remote, in actuality, it’s a 20-30-minute drive to downtown, but that time can creep way up in traffic depending on the time of day.

Why We Love It: A trip to Johns Island will make you feel as though you’ve escaped. The winding roads canopied by mature trees are quintessentially southern and will make you want to slow down and explore. Though home prices have risen considerably in the past decade, they are still more affordable and generally offer homeowners more space. It’s also convenient to Kiawah and Seabrook Island beach which offer a quieter experience than Folly Beach, Sullivans Island, or Isle of Palms.

Significant Developments/Developments on the Horizon: Johns Island has historically been home to just a few renowned restaurants beloved by locals. The Royal Tern opened in late 2018, and there has been a flurry of new restaurants announcements set to open in 2019, and while we’ll always love the classic standbys, we’re excited to see what the new openings bring.

On pace with the rest of the city, lots of homes are on also the horizon:

With more homes and surrounding developments, traffic remains a top concern and is a significant downside to the community.

Restaurant Recommendations:  Even if you’re visiting Charleston for just a few days, making the trip for a meal is worth it. The best spot for dinner is hands down The Wild Olive. The homemade Italian food and quiet ambiance never disappoint. For brunch, The Fat Hen serves up southern specialties and brunch cocktails in a quirky, eclectic space.

What To Do: Enjoy the scenery and make a stop at awe-inspiring Angel Oak Tree.

Best Spot for a Drink: Sip a local brew on the patio at Low Tide Brewing.

Favorite Spot: The Tattooed Moose on a Sunday afternoon. Enjoy the shade from the trees, a local beer and some deliciously greasy food. If you’re lucky, you’ll also have a front row seat to live music from local artists.
