Essentially, we’re giving you a rundown on the areas of Charleston that are growing, changing and evolving the most – starting with the Upper Peninsula. Many people lump the North Morrison corridor into the Upper Peninsula but we think this stretch is deserving of attention on its own so this will be in our next post (including Charleston’s best spots for BBQ!)
The Rundown: Charleston’s Peninsula is the heart of the city but the areas to the north of the crosstown were often overlooked in favor of cobblestone streets and waterfront antebellum mansions. The area, known to locals as the “Upper Peninsula,” is in the midst of an impressive renaissance marked by gentrifying neighborhoods, new restaurants, startups and more.
Southern Living even called it The One Neighborhood You Must Visit on Your Next Charleston Getaway.
Why We Love It: The area has local flavor and is still under the radar for many tourists.
Significant Developments: The improvements to the upper peninsula and the rising real estate prices further south have provided an ideal atmosphere for real estate investors. Several apartment projects have popped up or are in the works. From locally-owned restaurants and shops to bigger projects like the upscale food court Workshop, tracking down a good bite to eat in the area is easier than ever.
On the Horizon: This part of the city will continue to transition from its heavy industrial and commercial roots, mixing in more housing and restaurants. Be on the lookout for mixed-use developments and large apartment complexes – we’ll talk more about the most prominent projects in the upcoming NoMo blog.
Restaurant Recommendations: Depends what you’re looking for but we enjoy Huriyali for healthy fare, North Central Delicatessen for authentic NY bagels, Uneeda Sicilian for pizza and Renzo for a cozy Italian dinner. The Park Café is a stellar weekend brunch spot and Purlieu is a quaint date night option.
What To Do: Wander through Hampton Park or catch a Riverdogs game at The Joe.
Best Spot for a Drink: Moe’s Crosstown Tavern for well-priced libations, good eats and local vibes.
Favorite Spot: The patio at Leon’s on a spring afternoon.
